‘The County’ lands another World Cup stop | Bangor Daily News

AUGUSTA, Maine — Aroostook County has been selected to host both North American stops of the 2011 Biathlon World Cup, an event that draws Olympians and other top athletes from around the globe.

Fort Kent’s 10th Mountain Lodge had already been selected as one of the nine sites for the Biathlon World Cup, which combines cross country skiing with rifle marksmanship.

But on Tuesday, the International Biathlon Union announced that the second North American stop would be held at the Nordic Heritage Center in Presque Isle during the first week of February.

The back-to-back stops on the World Cup circuit mean that Aroostook County will have roughly 10 days in the limelight in an event that draws tens of thousands of spectators, not to mention tens of millions of television viewers in Europe.

Lost hiker was seeking shortcut when he became stranded | The Portland Press Herald / Maine Sunday Telegram

[I don’t get this sort of thing. This guy is supposed to be an experienced hiker and he broke a couple of very basic rules, the worst of which was leaving the trail. Never ever leave the trail, especially if you are unfamiliar with the terrain. And hike with a partner so if you are hurt there is someone to help or go for help. I certainly hope that the state of Maine attempts to recoup the cost of the search from this moron. — KM]

[Perfect example of why hikers should NOT venture out alone, especially in areas they don’t know well. Granted, as a child, I hiked around the mountain that was my backyard, but I knew that mountain pretty well and I knew as long as I went downhill I would find the lake, a paved road, mill siding, or logging road. – KM]

Sabattus teens express pride in their veterans | Lewiston Sun Journal

SABATTUS — Erin Black thought she’d be OK introducing her dad, two uncles and an aunt to her school. But moments in, her throat closed and her words ceased.

“I don’t know what happened,” the 14-year-old said later, still choking back tears. Her dad, Gary Black, stood nearby. His eyes were red and puffy.

“I never get a chance to tell them how proud I am,” Erin said.

That’s what the annual Memorial Day service at Sabattus Central School was meant to do.

Fathers, grandfathers, cousins and friends — veterans all — stood by while their eighth-grader introduced them. The intro included years served and where. Then, the kids spoke about why they were proud.

Erin Black called her dad “an American hero.”
