Maine stuff in my California apartment No. 2

Don't mind the guy in the photo. He's just "from away." But he does have Maine stuff in his California apartment, including the T-shirt, cup, moose crossing sign, and chili bowl.

How could you have a set of photos of Maine stuff in a California apartment without having some of moose stuff.

You may notice that there is no question mark after the previous sentence. That’s because it was so obviously rhetorical that I didn’t bother with one. Moose and Maine go together like, well, blueberries and Maine and lobsters and Maine and trees and Maine and … well, you get the point.

Yes, I have moose stuff from Maine in my California apartment. You will notice in the top photo alone that I am wearing a T-shirt and holding a cup with moose on each. The phrase on the cup reads “Moose Country: I brake for moose,” which is a great idea, breaking for moose, that is. Those gangling, clumsy, majestic monstrosities of Maine can do much damage to a vehicle – and the vehicle occupants – in a collision. They are best avoided on the road.

Anyway, back to the photo, you’ll notice a moose on a chili bowl on the shelf behind me. It’s currently holding stick matches for cigars. And there’s a moose crossing sign on the floor. I’m pretty sure I still have a T-shirt with a moose crossing sign on it, but I can’t recall just where it might be.

I’m also wearing hat with a moose on it with “Cool Moose” written in the moose’s antlers, but I seem to have inadvertently cropped that out of the photo. Just take my word for it.

I’ve included a few other photos of moose stuff from Maine in my California apartment.

This is an occasional multipart series of photos of things related to Maine that can be found in Keith Michaud’s California apartment. Keith Michaud shot today’s photos.

Here's a closer look at the chili bowl. My sister sent it to me this past Christmas. Or the Christmas before. I really didn't want to eat chili out of it so it currently holds stick matches I use for cigars.

Here's a closer look at the moose crossing sign. I am pretty sure I still have a T-shirt with the same design on it.

This is the design on the hat I'm wearing that was cropped out of the top photo. I posted a photo of the hat earlier.

I receved these lovely moose coffee cups this past Christmas. I love 'em because they desplay the essence of the moose. And there's a stuffed moose sitting in the cup on the left. I don't recall when or where I received the moose, but it is cute. At least, as far as moose go.

Oh, yeah, moose go with Maine like maple syrup goes with Maine. Here’s a maple syrup pitcher with a moose on it.

Blueberries on the balcony

If you look closely, you'll see a few blueberries on the bushes on my balcony. A touch of Maine in California.

A little more than a year or so ago I bought a couple of Southern Highbush Blueberry bushes and put them on my balcony for a touch of Maine in California.

And now some of the berries are starting to come out.

According to the instructions card that came with the bushes, they are a fairly new hybrid specifically for southern climates that “does triple duty with fruit, flowers, and foliage. Yields bountiful crops in sun or part shade. Self pollinating.”

I’m hoping that I won’t kill these bushes. I’d like a few blueberries.

I love these tiny blue nuggets of gold.

With only two bushes, I seriously doubt I'll harvest much more than a handful, but it will be a very tasty handful.

Here's the last of the blueberry photos ... for now.

‘The County’ lands another World Cup stop | Bangor Daily News

AUGUSTA, Maine — Aroostook County has been selected to host both North American stops of the 2011 Biathlon World Cup, an event that draws Olympians and other top athletes from around the globe.

Fort Kent’s 10th Mountain Lodge had already been selected as one of the nine sites for the Biathlon World Cup, which combines cross country skiing with rifle marksmanship.

But on Tuesday, the International Biathlon Union announced that the second North American stop would be held at the Nordic Heritage Center in Presque Isle during the first week of February.

The back-to-back stops on the World Cup circuit mean that Aroostook County will have roughly 10 days in the limelight in an event that draws tens of thousands of spectators, not to mention tens of millions of television viewers in Europe.

Lost hiker was seeking shortcut when he became stranded | The Portland Press Herald / Maine Sunday Telegram

[I don’t get this sort of thing. This guy is supposed to be an experienced hiker and he broke a couple of very basic rules, the worst of which was leaving the trail. Never ever leave the trail, especially if you are unfamiliar with the terrain. And hike with a partner so if you are hurt there is someone to help or go for help. I certainly hope that the state of Maine attempts to recoup the cost of the search from this moron. — KM]

Coffeehouse observation No. 147

I’m sitting in the coffeehouse and a woman who works for the local school district sat at the next table. She is loud, obnoxious, and apparently knows everything. And I mean EVERYTHING. She’s loudly complaining about the district, the former superintendent, and the school board. And I just want to stuff a pillow in her mouth to get her to be quiet. That’s not wrong; it would be a public service. … I’ve turned up Pearl Jam on the headphones and even that isn’t drowning out her voice.

Solution for Gulf of Mexico oil spill

We should plug the oil spill with BP executives. It might not actually stop the spill, but it sure would be some justice.

Editorial support for breaking away from Mass.

I’ve been in newspapers for 22 years or so and found the DownEast.com trivia question of interest.

What was the name of Maine’s first newspaper?

Answer:

The Falmouth Gazette and Weekly Advertiser began in 1785 and was used to promote separation from Massachusetts.

[Perfect example of why hikers should NOT venture out alone, especially in areas they don’t know well. Granted, as a child, I hiked around the mountain that was my backyard, but I knew that mountain pretty well and I knew as long as I went downhill I would find the lake, a paved road, mill siding, or logging road. – KM]

Coffeehouse observation No. 146

A teenager walked into the coffeehouse a little while ago carrying yellow roses and accompanied by three buddies. A little later, two teen girls came in. One of them received the roses. The guy and the girl are sitting on the couch hugging and chatting. The buddies and the girl who did not receive the roses are now sitting around a nearby table not talking because they did know each other before arriving at the coffeehouse. Is this what teenage dating has become? Yellow roses, teenage chatter, and the wingmen – and wingwoman – left in uncomfortable silence?

Wonders why a man in his mid- to late-50s seems compelled to loudly slurp his iced beverage every single time he’s in the coffeehouse. Every. Single. Time.

Coffeehouse observation No. 144

Just spotted a guy outside the coffeehouse take a yard-long stick, scrape up something gooey from the sidewalk, and stare at it for minutes with an expression of total pleasure and wonderment on his face.  Imagine, bliss found in discarded gum at the end of a stick.
