Coffeehouse observation No. 181

Some days you need a LARGE Red Eye instead of a medium. This is one of those days.

It is amazing how incredibly rude people can be. Within sight in the coffeehouse I see one woman working on her laptop, but she placed her coffee and pastry on the next table so now other patrons cannot use it. And two tables over are several people talking so loudly that I had to put on my headphones to listen to White Stripes. And I can still hear them. Thoughtlessness really should be a misdemeanor.

Could really use some hot coffee right now. I’m sitting in the Troke Branch Library in Stockton – within view of Exotic Java, no less – and the air conditioning is turned up so high that I’m considering breaking up the furniture to start a bonfire.

A young woman just walked into the coffeehouse wearing a gold braided headband, a purple dress and pink plastic sandals. I have an urge to ask her which superhero she is.

Maine Stuff in My California Apartment No. 8 … At least, until I consume them

Today’s photos are of a package from home and its contents.

My Mom and The Sis – probably with the fine assistance of nephew Max and niece Sophie – put it together for my birthday, which was a little over a month ago. Procrastination runs in the family. 🙂

But in all fairness to The Sis, she is a wife, mother of two very active children, Max and Sophie, and has a full-time job. She’s busy. My Mom – known as Mems to The Sis’s two very active children – is busy on her own what with grandchildren to spoil, friends to visit, bowling balls to throw, books to read, a dog’s ears to scratch, and box wine to drink.

Don’t get me wrong. It was a lovely surprise. I knew the package was coming and that it might be a while longer, so it truly was a lovely surprise nonetheless. And very much appreciated.

Here’s the package straight from Fryeburg, Maine. Well, perhaps not straight-arrow straight, but close enough.

Yes, that is me using a corkscrew to open the package from home. It was handy and recently had been used, so I knew it worked.

The package from home was waiting for me yesterday when I returned from a day at empresso coffeehouse, the coffeehouse I frequent the most. It is located in Empire Theater on the Miracle Mile in Stockton, Calif., and hence the name of the coffeehouse. I go there for the reasonably priced and reasonably tasty caffeinated beverages, friendly baristas, and WiFi I use for the protracted job search and to keep in touch with personal and professional contacts.

The package from home is opened. Inside were chocolate chip cookies, Bar Harbor Jam Company Maine Wild Blueberry Muffin Mix, Bar Harbor Jam Company Maine Wild Blueberry Jam, Captain Mowatt’s Blue Flame and Captain Mowatt’s Fireberry Sauce. Apparently, my request for “no sugar” went unheeded … again. 

Inside the package from home were three Ziploc bags of chocolate cookies, Bar Harbor Jam Company Maine Wild Blueberry Muffin Mix, Bar Harbor Jam Company Maine Wild Blueberry Jam, Captain Mowatt’s Blue Flame and Captain Mowatt’s Fireberry Sauce. Trust me on this, it is all yummy stuff and I will enjoy it all.

However – and it’s only a small “however” – I have asked several times for no more sugary treats. I’m closer to 50 than I would like and it is getting harder and harder to keep the weight off. The last thing I need is sugary treats.

To Mom and The Sis I thank you.

This is an occasional multipart series of photos of things related to Maine that can be found in Keith Michaud’s California apartment. All photos in this series are shot by and are the property of Keith Michaud.

It’s a pleasant feeling to come into a coffeehouse you haven’t visited in a while and the barista recognizes you, says “Hey, you haven’t been around lately” and still remembers your drink of choice. Thanks Exotic Java.

I’m sitting outside Exotic Java with a Red Eye – coffee with a double shot of espresso, not the medical condition – checking email, LinkedIn and Facebook, and enjoying the clear blue sky and gentle breeze. Except for the exhaust from the passing traffic, it’s not a bad place to be.

Spotted my new very favorite service – coffee delivery van. They deliver coffee to offices and other gatherings. I don’t think you can go wrong with a service like that.

I skipped the coffeehouse today and now am regretting it. I’m struggling to keep my eyelids open. … And I’m listening to Dana Owens and she’s singing “Close Your Eyes.” I just can’t win.

Knitting is not a lost art. Some traditions continue. There is a young woman – early 20s, I’m guessing – who is sitting on the couch at the coffeehouse knitting. Another young woman – also in her early 20s – has been in empresso before knitting. Juxtapose the laptop computers and techno music is a little odd, perhaps, but not too much.

Want to know about the origins of the phrase “cup of joe”? Yahoo! Answers asked the question and someone pointed them in the direction of a U.S. Navy website on naval traditions. We use “cup of joe” because:

“Josephus Daniels (May 18, 1862-January 15, 1948) was appointed Secretary of the Navy by President Woodrow Wilson in 1913. Among his reforms of the Navy were inaugurating the practice of making 100 Sailors from the Fleet eligible for entrance into the Naval Academy, the introduction of women into the service, and the abolishment of the officers’ wine mess. From that time on, the strongest drink aboard Navy ships could only be coffee and over the years, a cup of coffee became known as ‘a cup of Joe.’”

Now we all know where it comes from.

Lovey-dovey couples in the coffeehouse are annoying to a guy who hasn’t had a date in a while. I’m just saying.

The playlist at the coffeehouse included Isaac Hayes’ “Shaft.” I nearly hared the lyrics with my Facebook friends, but realized that some of the words might be words and phrases have a different meaning today. Ah, well, it is all about context.

Stockton, you never fail to dazzle and amaze. … A man in his 60s or 70s just walked into the coffeehouse wearing a very short skirt. And, no, it in no way resembled a kilt. … He looks a little bit like Walter Matthau.

The infant daughter of the empresso owners is quite vocal today. One of the baristas thinks the red-haired child is trying to talk Mom into getting moving because she’s bouncing in her chair.
