Maine tourism gets its glow back: Sun-filled summer has businesses thriving again after a dreary 2009

PORTLAND — Maine’s tourism industry is rebounding from last year’s miserable summer, and the state’s restaurants, campgrounds and hotels are getting a much-needed boost in income.

Although many consumers remain cautious about spending because of the sluggish economy, this summer’s sunny weather has been a huge improvement over last summer’s rainy and cool weather, said Steve DiMillo of DiMillo’s Floating Restaurant in Portland.

He said his restaurant has been serving 1,000 meals a day – a 10 percent increase over last year. “Great weather trumps everything,” he said. “The sunshine is obviously our friend.”

Sales at restaurants in Maine are up 2 percent to 4 percent this summer over last summer, according to industry estimates.

Farmers find friends indeed: Volunteers step up for a Gorham family after high winds blow down their barn | The Portland Press Herald / Maine Sunday Telegram

[Tornadoes are not particularly common in Maine, but they are not unheard of either. A couple of them went through southern Maine the other day. One touched down in Gorham, home of the University of Southern Maine. A woman who lives nearby with whom I went to USM says the campus was not hit, but there was quite a bit of damage elsewhere. This link goes to the story and has a link to reader submitted photos. It must have been a very frightening experience for the people who live there. — KM]

Aroostook farmers welcoming the weather – Bangor Daily News

[Potato farming is big in Aroostook County, the county where I grew up. I even picked potatoes one fall break from school — it was cold, wet, muddy, back-breaking work. The local school district generally let kids out for a week or so at harvest time so farmers could have enough hands to pick their crop. Mechanical harvesters pretty much take care of that now, I suspect. — KM]

Ice-out breaks statewide records | Bangor Daily News

Seasonal thaw comes

earlier than expected

FORT KENT, Maine — Let Capistrano keep its swallows and Hinckley, Ohio, is welcome to its buzzards. Any Mainer knows the real harbinger of spring is ice-out.

Largely regarded as the time when a body of water may be navigated from one end to the other unimpeded by ice, the seasonal event has spawned countless contests, raffles, impromptu parties, webcams and even its own Facebook fans’ page for the lakes and rivers around the state.

This year, many of Maine’s lakes are already clear of ice days and even weeks ahead of schedule.

“This year is extremely unusual,” Tim Thurston, owner of Maine Lake Charts of Gardiner, said Thursday. “I would not be surprised if every lake in Maine has a record or near record for ice-out.”

Maine tussles with mix of wind, rain and snow | Bangor Daily News

From the Bangor Daily News, Mainers are reminded to:

• Monitor weather forecasts closely for expected conditions in your area.

• Stay clear of flooded roadways. Respect all barricades, and report flooded areas to local officials.

• Use extreme care driving in wintry conditions. Stay off the roads if possible.

• If power goes out, use generators and alternate heat sources safely. Never run a generator in a basement or attached garage. Carbon monoxide poisoning may result.

• Continue to keep roofs clear of snow. Snowfall may be heavy and wet. Make sure heating system vents are clear to prevent carbon monoxide from backing up in the home.

• Protect outside oil tanks from snow and ice falling from the roof. Serious oil spills can result.

• Check on neighbors, family and friends who may need special assistance to clear snow and to weather the storm.
